Soviet Grocery Store 1986. And we think working in retail is bad now…

This is what a typical grocery store in Russia was like during communism. You couldn’t buy certain foods on certain days, and even when you were allowed too buy something – the store most likely didn’t have it. And this is not a depiction of a store in a rural part of Russia – this is a store in the capital city of Moscow. It can be imagined that rural stores were much worse

Wrong burger orders lead to shot being fired at Grand Rapids McDonald’s

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — After receiving a series of incorrect burger orders, police say a 29-year-old Grand Rapids woman became verbally abusive and fired one pistol round into a McDonald’s.
The altercation took place around 3 a.m. Monday, Feb. 10, at the McDonald’s in the 400 block of 28th Street SE, according to Lt. John Bylsma.
On Sunday evening, two women arrived at the restaurant’s drive-through window and placed an order for a burger. After discovering the order was incorrect, the women reportedly became upset and complained about the mistake. The women were told they would receive a free meal at the time of their next visit and left the establishment.
Hours later, Bylsma said the women returned to the same McDonald’s location, placed the same order, and again received an incorrectly prepared burger.
This time, the passenger began a verbal confrontation with the employee and exited the vehicle to yell and shoot one pistol round into the window of the restaurant. No one was injured as a result.
Following the shooting, the passenger reentered the vehicle and fled with the driver.
However, the women had left a phone number at the restaurant at the time of the first incorrect burger so they could be contacted about the mistake and the promised free meal. Lt. Bylsma said this aided Grand Rapids Police in locating the women and taking them into custody.
The passenger was arrested and is expected to be arraigned for two charges: carrying a concealed weapon without a permit and discharge of a loaded weapon into an occupied building. The driver was interviewed and released. Names are being withheld pending arraignment this afternoon

How long will you need to work before you can afford to buy yourself a beer in your own country?

Throwing back a cold one can be a costly affair—especially if you’re living off the minimum wage in a country like Georgia or Bangladesh.

How do we know that? Because we made a Beer Index.

Throwing back a cold one can be a costly affair—especially if you’re living off the minimum wage in a country like Georgia or Bangladesh.

How do we know that? Because we made a Beer Index.

By dividing the average price a local has to pay to get a beer by the hourly minimum wage (assuming a 40-hour work week) a person makes in each country, we were able to approximate how long it takes someone making the minimum wage to earn enough to buy a brew at a local bar. The Economist did something similar back in 2012, but used countries’ median wages, and only included 27 countries. This one is a bit more comprehensive (and a bit more about the people who make the least.)
Some minimum wages stack up pretty favorably against domestic beer prices, while others do just the opposite. In Georgia, for instance, it takes more than half a day’s worth of work to make enough to pay for a pint. In Puerto Rico, it takes only 12 minutes.
