McDonald’s Accused Of Firing Single Mother For Donating Food To Firefighters

A McDonald’s employee claims she was fired from her job at the hamburger chain after she paid for a donation of food for firefighters.

Heather Levia, a single mother in nursing school and an eight-year employee of McDonald’s, was working the morning shift at an Olean, N.Y., McDonald’s establishment last week when she received a call from the Salvation Army and was asked if McDonald’s could donate some food to local firefighters who had been called to a house fire earlier that day, according to the Olean Times Herald. (WIVB reports the firefighters themselves placed the orders.) Levia called her corporate office and asked if the company would cover the cost, but the request was reportedly denied. So, she and her coworkers then pooled their money and paid $150 for the food.

When word got out that the employees paid the bill, the firefighters allegedly called McDonald’s to complain about Levia and the others being made to “feel obligated to pay for their [the firefighters’] meals,” according to WIVB. Levia, 23, claims her boss then told her “you opened a whole bee’s nest,” per WIVB.

On Friday, Feb. 14, Levia was fired.

McDonald’s denied allegations that she was let go for the donations in an emailed statement sent to The Huffington Post on Feb. 20, on behalf of the Olean McDonald’s owner, Tom Meyers.

“We are aware that certain allegations have been made concerning the reasons for Heather Levia’s termination,” the statement read, in part. “Out of respect for Ms. Levia and her privacy, it would not be appropriate to comment in detail on the reasons she is no longer employed by our organization. Still, it should be pointed out that the allegations are absolutely not true. We would never penalize an employee for showing appropriate gratitude for the work of our firefighters.”

Levia posted about the termination on her Facebook page, writing:

I have been with the olean mcdonalds for almost eight years.. Today I was terminated because local firefighters called for donations for food. The mcdonalds company denied the donations to help support our firefighters. Myself and two other employees paid out of pocket to feed these firemen.. asking the office before answering yes or no to these firemen. I was told I swore and Hung up on a office worker. Who would ever think that someone would lose their job for giving to those who risk their lives to save ours [all sic].

“I was told I was being fired for going against the wishes of McDonald’s as well has having my own opinion on not donating to the firefighters,” she told the Olean Times Herald. “I was so caught off-guard by this. I’m very distraught that I would be fired over something like this. I was just trying to give back to the firefighters and they weren’t asking for much

Grocery Store Customer Berates Employee With Asperger’s Syndrome

The internet is coming to the defense of longtime Wegmans grocery store employee Chris Tuttle after he was berated by a customer for being “too slow” to check her out on Saturday. Tuttle, diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, has worked at the store for over seven years and while being a cashier isn’t his primary job, his manager will sometimes ask him to cover a register if the store is busy.

According to his sister, Jamie Tuttle-Virkler, Tuttle was checking out a woman’s groceries on Saturday when she began yelling at him for not moving fast enough. The woman then left in the middle of the transaction to find Tuttle’s manager, and by the time she returned to the line, Tuttle was so shaken he dropped a candle and it shattered. The manager immediately removed him from his cashier position, but Tuttle remained upset for the rest of the day.

As his sister wrote in a Facebook post:

What this woman doesn’t know is that 10 hours later, Chris told me the story as if it just happened, he was just as stressed and just as upset. She has no idea how damaging her actions were…to one person. Part of Asperger’s is the inability to move on, to not be able to wrap his mind around the fact that this woman isn’t worth it. To hear him tell the story, your heart will break. He doesn’t understand why someone would be so nasty to him and for him, he takes it personal.

After much discussion with the whole family last night, he doesn’t get that some people are just like that. Some people are just unaware of how their actions effect others and how their rudeness needs to be ignored and that it has nothing to do with him. I tell him all the time, some people will “get you” and some won’t. The people that “get you” those people are your friends, focus your energy there.

She then asked those in her community who visit the store to either leave her brother a message of support on Facebook or let him know he’s doing a great job next time they see him at Wegmans. And while the local community responded positively, so did the world; by Monday evening, the post had over 77,000 likes, 12,000 shares, and over 12,000 messages of support for Tuttle.

The moving messages range from those who interact with Tuttle regularly to Wegmans employees who have never met him, reminding him that sometimes grocery store customers are just assholes. As Amy Johnson Strong writes to him, “Chris, I’ve worked for Wegmans for 21 years and I’ve been yelled at by customers too. It shakes you up. No doubt about it. Keep your chin up and keep doing the great job you do. For every difficult customer there are hundreds more who are thankful for your help. Be strong for them. They need you.”

IHOP FIRES 2 WAITRESSES AFTER CUSTOMER THROWS A GLASS OF MILK CAUSING FACE INJURIES

A waitress at an Evansville, IN IHOP was injured by a customer throwing a glass of milk in her face. Apparently the custy and server were acuaintances with ongoing problems, so you can imagine management was not thrilled. On the IHOP Facebook page the server, Jasmine Ewards, posted this photo and is saying the manager fired her and someone standing up for her. Customers also supported her actions in handling the attack. The news report below doesn’t mention the double firing and there has not been any mention of the attack in mainstream media (it happened on February 3rd). Is this just another day at IHOP? Is it okay to be attacked at your job???? — even if you know the person? Do you think it was just that she and someone standing up for her got fired after the attack? Why not let a restraining order take care of the violent custy?

Here is what Jasmine Ewards wrote on the IHOP Facebook page:

My name is Jasmine Edwards i worked at ihop in Evansville indiana as you can see i got hurt at work.A lady hit me with a glass of milk and i had to get 8 stitches. My boss told me that it was fired and that my people didnt know how to act,I didnt do anything wrong customers even said that i handled the situation very well.Any way he fired me and another lady for standing up for me.This is not right and i ask that you Please Share-thanks — with Larry Alvey.

From Courier Press:

EVANSVILLE — An IHOP worker went to the hospital Sunday after a customer threw a glass of milk at her, according to an Evansville Police Department report.
That customer, 20-year-old Jazmine Bryson, was arrested and accused of battery causing serious bodily injury, a class C felony. The glass shattered when it struck the worker.
According to the police department affidavit, the 19-year-old victim, identified as Jasmine Edwards, told investigators that she and Bryson are acquaintances and that the pair have had “ongoing problems.” Edwards told police that Bryson came into the restaurant with the worker’s cousin on Sunday, and that Edwards went to talk to him.

Bryson asked the worker to leave, according to Edwards’ statement to police. As the worker turned away, Bryson reportedly threw a glass of milk at her. Edwards told police that the glass broke when it struck her face and the shattered glass cut her above the eye.
The incident happened at about 12:30 p.m., according to the report.
Edwards went to Deaconess Gateway Hospital. According to the affidavit, Edwards told police that the cut required stitches.
In an interview with investigators, Bryson admitted to throwing the glass. However, she told police that Edwards was the aggressor and that she was defending herself, according to the affidavit.
Bryson is being held at the Vanderburgh County Jail
