Tesco refuses to sell Liam Whelan, 16, teaspoons pack

Liam Whelan was “really embarrassed”, his stepmother said

A 16-year-old boy was told he was too young to buy a pack of teaspoons by a supermarket in Lancashire.

Liam Whelan was sent by his stepmother to their local Tesco in Haslingden to buy replacements for the spoons he keeps losing.

But staff refused to sell the 57p pack of teaspoons to Liam, from Deardengate, because he was not 18.

His stepmother Yvette Whelan said the decision was “daft”. Tesco apologised for staff not using their judgement.

Mrs Whelan said she sent Liam out to buy the spoons because he and his brother, Josh, keep losing them.

She admitted she thought he was lying about the incident at first and he had not been to the store.

“Knives, forks I can understand but teaspoons? No,” she said.

“There’s just no common sense.”

Tesco has apologised for the incident

Mrs Whelan said Liam was “really embarrassed” by being sent home empty-handed.

A Tesco spokesperson said: “We do include a till prompt for proof of age on our self-service tills for some items.

“We ask our colleagues to use their judgment as to whether this should be applied.

“In this instance, this was not followed and we apologise to our customer for any inconvenience caused.”

Man gets two DWIs at the same McDonald’s location in one day.

Oneonta, New York

In the early morning hours of March 10, 2014, 31-year-old Zachary Boynton decided to hit up McDonald’s for a late night meal. Unfortunately, he was also drunk.

Now as everyone knows, going through the drive thru at the Golden Arches while intoxicated can often result in two very unfortunate outcomes:

1. Ordering a Filet-O-Fish

2. Ramming into another vehicle.

While no information exists about what Zachary ordered, he did manage to slam into the back of the car in front of him. The police were called, Zachary got a ticket, and he was turned over to some sober friends….who apparently didn’t realize that driving under the influence wasn’t a new thing for their fast food craving companion.

At 5:16 AM that same morning, the same McDonald’s called police to report that a drunk driver hadslammed into the side of their building. Sure enough, it was Zachary behind the wheel again (and apparently unaware that the lobby didn’t open until 6:00 AM.

The police did what they should have done the first time with a repeat offender (he’d just been busted a few months ago for the same offense) and arrested him at his home later that day.

Zachary Boyton was charged with a second DWI and is currently awaiting trial
