16 infuriating things about working in retail

WORKING IN RETAIL can be really tough.  Yes, there are days when your co-workers are sound and your customers are lovely, but all too often that is not the case.

Sometimes people are jerks, sometimes your boss needs to get stuffed and sometimes the job is a pain.

Here are 16 infuriating things about working in retail.

People trying things on just for a laugh

rage

Oh yeah.  Go ahead, have your gas craic trying on loads of stuff.

It doesn’t matter that I’ll have to tidy it all up, put it on hangers and put it out on the floor again.  As long as you have your fun!

People carelessly pulling apart your carefully folded piles of clothing

Shoplifters

No matter what shop you work in, no matter what kind of security you have, you will know the shoplifters, and they will be a pain in the ass.

Customers shouting at you over things that have nothing to do with you

breaking-bad-fu

I’m sorry that the article of clothing you purchased in an entirely different shop didn’t work out for you, but kindly stop spitting in my face!

Power hungry managers

so-mad-i-could

They should never have been allowed to be in charge of anything, let alone you.

Being forced to do pointless things by your boss

Purely so they can wield the aforementioned power.

People trying to return things that had clearly been worn

It’s covered in makeup and it stinks of cigarettes.  Do they think you’re stupid or something?

Sizing

Every day, you are forced to spend ages arranging clothing in order of size, only for it to be immediately messed up when customers got involved.

Christmas

Not only do you have to work, but you have to work the busiest, most panicked, hectic days of the year.

Customers who ignore the fact that it’s past closing time

f-u-all

They don’t care that the shop just closed, they want to try on 17 items.

God forbid that a customer should see you using the same doors as them.  They might forget for a moment that they’re better than you.

Chipotle Workers Walk Out Mid-Day Because They Work In ‘Sweatshop Conditions’

BxLkaa_IIAA3gqC

The fast food establishment’s staff was so fed up with their working conditions that they simply turned off the lights, closed the door and walked out. The restaurant remained closed for hours on Wednesday.

A tweet from the Daily Collegian showed a paper sign on the door that read,

Ask our corporate offices why their employees are forced to work in borderline sweatshop conditions… People > Profits.

Chipotle spokesman Chris Arnold issued a statement, saying that a minority of the staff chose to speak for them all.

He said,

A few employees quit, locking out a majority of others who are enthusiastic to return to work.

Brian Healy, the restaurant’s manager, told State College that the working conditions were truly disgraceful. The Mexican food chain markets itself as transparent, fair and progressive. On the contrary, Healy called conditions at the restaurant “heinous.”

He said,

I just want to see people treated better. We’re not trying to start a strike or anything like that.

The restaurant reportedly re-opened its doors later that day. The incident happened just days after fast food workers picketed for better wages in three dozen cities across the country.

WinCo. They’re Being Called ‘Walmart’s Worst Nightmare

Because now I know *why* people are calling them “Walmart’s worst nightmare.”

Meet WinCo, a retail chain with just under a hundred stores in eight states. They’re growing fast and somehow manage to undercut Walmart’s “always low prices.”

Compared to Walmart’s more than 4,000 stores in the U.S. alone, perhaps it’s a little premature to call them “Walmart’s worst nightmare.” But hopefully we can all agree it wouldn’t be such a bad thing for Walmart to lose more business to a company like this.

Here are four ways WinCo is CRUSHING Walmart.

1. CUSTOMER SATISFACTION

WinCo: Smart business model makes for low prices and good customer experience.

Walmart: Tops the list of retailers with THE WORST customer satisfaction ratings.

Walmart keeps prices low, in part, by systematically understaffing their stores. So if you’ve ever wondered what’s up with those empty shelves in your local Wally World, there’s your answer.

2. WAGES

WinCo: Employee pay starting around $11 per hour.

Walmart: Employee pay starting around $8 per hour.

Walmart’s absurdly low wages cost taxpayers billions of dollars every year in public assistance for their workers (food stamps, Medicaid, housing subsidies, etc.). Meanwhile, the company also profits from taxpayers by using a loophole that allows their executives to take home millions of dollars on top of their salaries.

Walmart is exploiting its workers so badly that even investors think they deserve a raise.

3. BENEFITS

WinCo: Health benefits and pensions for employees working 24+ hours per week.

Walmart: Cutting health insurance for employees working less than 30 hours per week.

Despite billions in profits and redonkulous executive pay packages, Walmart is kicking thousands of part-time workers off their health plan. Those who remain eligible for Walmart’s health coverage are paying a lot more out of pocket. Suffice it to say their workers are not happy.

4. OWNERSHIP

WinCo: Employee-owned through stock ownership program.

Walmart: More than half-owned by one of the world’s richest families.

WinCo’s employee stock ownership program makes the interests of the company and its employees one and the same. Their people work harder and stick around for longer because the success of the company means success (and retirement) for them.

Between employee stock ownership and 401(k) plans, hundreds of WinCo workers now have retirement savings of over $1 million.
